Boys in a Tree

This painting is an enigma. It is non-linear. It depicts two adolescent boys and a mythical figure up in a tree. What are they doing there? Why are they up in a tree? Why do people climb trees? Why would they? There are patterns created by the branches and pine needles set against the pale sky. I suppose the peculiar mood this painting conjures is more important to consider rather than any logical interpretation one might come up with. Adolescence is confusing and groundless. So is this painting.
